GREENVILLE, Calif. — CAL FIRE’s current residential burn-status directory lists Plumas County under “Permit Required” effective November 1, 2026, at 6 a.m., replacing the earlier seasonal suspension for the state responsibility area. The change affects eligible residential outdoor burning where state rules apply, but it does not mean residents may burn whenever they wish.
What residents must check first
CAL FIRE says an allowed status still requires a valid permit when applicable and confirmation that the local air district has declared a permissive burn day. Weather, smoke conditions, nearby vegetation and local ordinances may impose additional limitations. Permits can be obtained through California’s official online permit system, subject to eligibility and safety training.
For the Greenville and Indian Valley area, it is important to determine whether the property lies within CAL FIRE’s state responsibility area or another fire jurisdiction. The county-level table is a summary of state rules; it does not cancel federal forest restrictions, local fire-district policies or temporary prohibitions. Homeowners should not assume a backyard burn is legal solely because the calendar has reached November.
Hazard-reduction burning is not garbage disposal
CAL FIRE’s residential burn rules concern permitted vegetation and hazard reduction, not burning household trash, treated wood or other prohibited materials. Residents must follow conditions printed on their permit, keep required clearance and tools available, and comply with any current wind or air-quality restrictions.
People who need to dispose of branches following the fire season should consider lawful debris disposal and chipping options if burning is not permitted at their address. Greenville-area residents can confirm applicable rules with the local fire authority and the air district before lighting a pile.
